GTA 6 GAMEPLAY SYSTEMS
GTA 6 Gameplay Explained: How the Game Actually Works
Rockstar has shown more than trailers. Invited creators and journalists have watched extended gameplay, giving us a closer look at robberies, police searches, stolen cars and everyday life with Jason and Lucia. Here is how those systems appear to work, what they change for you and where the evidence stops.

The 60-second read
What feels different from GTA 5?
Our reading of the evidence: the decisions around the action deserve as much attention as the action itself. These are the shifts to watch, not a verdict on the finished game.
- 01
Crime has an aftermath
Think beyond the getaway: how you handle a robbery may shape how the world reacts.
- 02
A car is more than transport
Getting inside, dealing with security and making a stolen car yours are separate jobs.
- 03
Two people, not two skins
Preview reporting puts the partnership into everyday travel: one character drives while the other uses the phone.
- 04
What you carry changes how people react
A visible weapon can matter before a fight starts.
- 05
Seen is not identified
Witnesses, clothing and vehicle information can matter to a search. Escaping the chase may not resolve every identifying clue.
- 06
A detour can be the point
Previewers describe shared jetski trips, exercise and nightlife. Not every activity needs to be a money-making route.

Three evidence levels. No silent upgrades.
- ROCKSTAR CONFIRMED
- A direct Rockstar statement, official material or documented developer statement. The label confirms this claim, not every rule around it.
- SEEN IN ROCKSTAR PREVIEW
- A journalist or invited creator describes seeing it in Rockstar's controlled demonstration. They watched; they did not independently play it.
- PREVIEW-REPORTED / MAY CHANGE
- A finer rule or interpretation reported by a previewer, without a separately verified Rockstar statement here. Launch rules may differ.
Examples illustrate the sourced behaviour; they are not extra scenes we witnessed. “Why it matters” is ViceSix interpretation. Previewers agreeing on a detail does not make it an official rule.
Crime & Robberies
A robbery is a sequence of decisions, not just a payout.
How it works
Store robberies in the demonstration
EL PAÍS watched store robberies during Nelson's demonstration.
Security, safes and divided roles
Its preview describes alarms, camera recordings, safes and a partner watching hostages. These are reported options, not a checklist for every robbery.
Police & Identification
A crime being reported is not the same as police knowing who you are.
How it works
What do the police know?
Nelson describes crime reporting that depends on witnesses, and searches using appearance, clothing and vehicle information. Leaving a car does not necessarily clear suspicion.

Six stars, a wider search
TGG reports six wanted stars and a wider search at the highest level. EL PAÍS also reports six stars; the exact escalation rules remain preview information.

- Crime reported
- What identifies you?
- Police search
- Change known clues / leave search area
Conceptual summary of Nelson's explanation, not a guaranteed escape sequence. Identification can include more than one clue.
Criminal Profile
Getting away and deciding what kind of criminal to be are different questions.
How it works
Professional or aggressive, not good or bad
Nelson describes professional versus aggressive criminal behaviour affecting how the world reacts. This is not simply RDR2's good-versus-bad Honor meter.
How a robbery can reflect your approach
TGG describes a robbery without unnecessary killing as professional conduct, and reports profile information in a character menu.
Weapons & Combat
A weapon can draw attention before you fire it.
How it works
Carrying and storage
Nelson confirms visible long guns, vehicle storage and Ammu-Nation lockers; holding a gun can change nearby reactions.
Focus and vulnerable points
TGG describes Focus slowing time and highlighting vulnerable points on people and vehicles.
Using the surroundings in a fight
EL PAÍS observed melee using environmental objects, including a car door.
Cars, Theft & Ownership
Access, security and ownership are three different hurdles.
How it works
The vehicle changes the job
Nelson describes tools for older cars, key cloning for newer vehicles, trackers and specialist removal. Theft does not automatically establish ownership; registration and garages matter.

Driving and fuel
TGG describes weightier driving and reports fuel and EV charging. That is a hands-off impression, not independent handling testing.
- Choose vehicle
- Gain access / start
- Security or tracker?
- Resolve restrictions
- Register / keep or sell
Conditional overview of Nelson's vehicle explanation. Not every car follows every step; access to services can differ.
Money & Economy
Loot, money in hand and money safely stored are not interchangeable.
How it works
From loot to usable money
TGG distinguishes bank funds, carried cash and bagged loot; he reports taking loot to a fence and depositing cash at an ATM.
- Bagged loot
- Fence
- Money
TGG's account, 11:04 onward. This does not establish a universal cleaning or laundering requirement for all cash.
Jason & Lucia
The partnership changes ordinary journeys, not just story scenes.
How it works
Switching has limits
Nelson confirms story-dependent switching restrictions and optional romantic investment; the pair can remain collaborators.
Who drives, who uses the phone?
Dazed describes independent activity and switching between driver and passenger perspectives, including using the phone while the partner drives.
Fitness, Food & Character State
A food boost wears off; training is about longer-term development.
How it works
Temporary buffs and training-based stats
Nelson confirms gym minigames, training-based stats and temporary food buffs. Dazed also describes food and exercise changing body shape.

World, Interiors & NPCs
Judge interactivity by specific encounters, not map-size claims.
How it works
Inside the demonstrated apartment
EL PAÍS watched the demonstration begin inside an apartment, with Vice City visible outside.
How people look, move and interact
Rockstar character art director Jamie-Lee Lloyd tells Dazed that new tools support a more varied population, combining appearance, movement and interaction.
Activities Between Missions
A place to spend time, not only a route to the next job.
How it works
Shared leisure
Dazed describes Jason and Lucia riding a jetski together. Its feature also discusses exercise and nightlife as parts of their world.
Phone, Social Media & HUD
A social post may give you a reason to go somewhere.
How it works
Finding events through the feed
Dazed describes working in-game social feeds. TGG reports that posts can point toward events in the world.

Health, stamina and Focus on screen
TGG identifies health, stamina and Focus in the preview HUD.

What We Still Don't Know
The previews explain more of what you can do. These questions will determine how those systems play over a full game, and the sources reviewed here do not yet answer them.
- How will the finished game play?
- The full console performance-mode menu, final aiming options and which preview rules survive into the launch build.
- Where are the limits?
- Exact inventory limits, the full Criminal Profile formula, complete police logic and every relationship consequence.
- What will your time and money buy?
- Final payouts, costs, balancing, service unlocks and how far repeatable earning routes can take you.
- What about PC and online?
- PC release timing and the full GTA Online successor plan. Campaign rules are not evidence of how an unannounced online mode will work.
Keep these gaps in mind when planning how you will play. Preview rules and balancing can change before launch. ViceSix has not independently played or tested GTA 6.
